What is Manutention?

Manutention is a French word meaning "Manual Handling", and in Australia it is used to describe an approach to manual handling training It was developed by Paul Dotte, a French Physiotherapist, and has a strong biomechanical basis enhanced by principles from:

* The study of human movement

* Martial Arts

* Weightlifting

* Abseiling

The teaching approach is based on adult learning principles. The focus is on retraining specific movement patterns and therefore lends itself to competency measurement.

Why Manutention?

Manutention training helps develop safe movement behaviour. Participants are taught a system of postures and actions that can be integrated into any activity requiring manual handling. The postures and actions are used as “building blocks” to safe handling or are the fundamental components to safer manual handling.

Where can it be used?

Manutention skills training can help reduce the risk of injury in the workplace or at home. The safe postures and actions can be applied across all manual handling tasks and therefore manutention can be used everywhere!

In the Workplace?

Manutention training is or “can be used “as the skills training component of a systems approach to risk control. It complies with Occupational Health and Safety legislation, mandatory across all states in Australia and complements manual handling policies.

The Australian Association of Manutention Practitioners has embraced this requirement and all courses include contemporary risk management practices within a integrated system of safety.
