General Loads Handling Courses:
Manual Handling Courses for the Health Care Industry:
‘A Kinematic Evaluation of Current Best Practice and
Manutention Patient Handling Techniques’ Patient handling is widely recognised as a major manual handling
risk. Research on occupational groups involved in patient handling, such
as nurses and physiotherapists, has consistently shown a high prevalence
of work-related musculoskeletal injury. In response to this problem,
considerable effort has been devoted to training patient handlers in the
technique of least risk. However, there is little evidence to suggest
which techniques are the 'safest'. The aim of this study was to use kinematic data to determine the
relative risk of current best practice and manutention patient handling
techniques. Current best practice was based on anecdotal evidence and the
expert opinion of trainers in patient handling technique. Manutention is a
new system of patient handling in Australia, which claims to reduce
patient handling injuries and promote patient and carer comfort. To achieve this aim, six of the most important patient handling
tasks ('sit up', 'move up', 'sit out', 'bed to chair', 'chair to chair'
and 'slump') were chosen based on previous research. Twenty-one subjects
performed the tasks whilst the displacement, velocity and acceleration of
lumbar spine movement were measured using a lumbar motion monitor. The results of the study provide guidelines on which technique is
safer for each of the patient handling tasks based on least lumbar spine
displacement, velocity and acceleration. Manutention was found to be the
'safest' technique for the tasks 'sit up', 'move up', 'sit out' and 'bed
to chair'. Current best practice was found to be the 'safest' technique
for the tasks 'chair to chair' and 'slump'. These guidelines provide additional information to assist
individual patient handlers, employers, and patient handling experts in
selecting the 'safest' patient handling technique. As of January
2002 it is planned to tie the membership to a Calendar year rather than
the financial year. In addition, a
system of membership reminders is to be established to assist members in
renewing their membership with ease.
Please let us know by sending suggestions to our Admin
Assistant, Kerry Reid on: kerry.reid@ozemail.com.au A Return
to Work with Manutention, Results in a New Admin Assistant! Kerry became the first AAMP(WA) Inc Administrative
Assistant in late 2001, after she successfully completed a Certificate 2
in Loads. This was remarkable in itself, as it followed a 3-year history
of back pain, surgery and restriction following a workplace manual
handling injury. Her final rehabilitation resulted from changed postural
habits acquired through this Manutention course, and has now been so
successful, that she has been able to return to permanent employment as an
RN at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.
In addition to this, she is currently preparing to qualify as a
Manutention Trainer herself! This new life in nursing has reduced her availability
for other work, and as a result Kerry handed in her resignation as
AAMP(WA)’s Administrative Assistant earlier this year We now have a new Admin Assistant! Janet Boer- Draffin has been appointed in Kerry’s place
as AAMP(WA) Inc Administrative Assistant. Our thanks go to Kerry for her contribution in setting
up the role for AAMP(WA). It was
not an easy task drawing everything together, but she did a terrific job
in the limited time available to her.
Despite her resignation from formal employment by the AAMP(WA), we
are pleased that Kerry has remained active on the AAMP(WA) committee. Kerry’s replacement in the role, Janet has already
proved her merit as she has picked up where Kerry left off and has made
her own mark on the role. Janet Boer-Draffin has been
appointed in Kerry’s place as AAMP(WA) Inc Administrative Assistant Janet is also a Manutention Practitioner who is working
towards becoming a Manutention Trainer.
She too received her basic Manutention training as part of a
retraining process following a workplace injury. We welcome her to new role and wish her all the best,
both in her employment with us, and in her studies towards accessing her
Certificate 4 in Manual Handling- Manutention in July this year.

all memberships are due again in January 2003. If you have
completed a Certificate 2 in Health Care or Loads since July 2001, you are
automatically a member until December 2002, and membership renewal will be
offered again to you in January 2003. Please let us know
