General Loads Handling
Courses:
Manual Handling Courses for
the Health Care Industry:
As part of a programme to
prevent injury in the workplace, Silver Chain has recently initiated a
manual handling training programme using the Manutention approach. ‘Following a six month trial,
over 560 staff have now been trained by Sue Forrest, our Manutention
Training Coordinator. Sue has
worked as a nurse and an occupational safety and health officer, so she
has first hand experience of the potential hazards involved in lifting,
pulling, carrying and other activities requiring the use of force. Manutention is a French word
meaning ‘manual handling’ and is used to brand an approach developed by
Paul Dotte, a French physiotherapist. This method enables people to
learn how to minimise effort and maximise results through understanding
safe postures and movements.
Manutention is about using major muscle groups and body weight to
assist in manual handling activities, ranging from transferring a person
to moving a box of paper. Sue Forrest says the feedback
from the trial has been overwhelming and, as a result, the training
program has become an integral part of Silver Chain’s risk management
approach. It is now fully integrated
into our occupational safety and health training program and we expect
this to reduce the incidence of carers’ back pain and injury.’ AAMP(WA)
would like to acknowledge Silver Chain and photographer Robert Frith for
this photo and article. As of January 2002 it is planned to tie the membership
to a Calendar year rather than the financial year. In addition, a system of membership
reminders is to be established to assist members in renewing their membership
with ease. Please let us know by sending suggestions to our Admin
Assistant, Janet Boer-Draffin on: boer@bigpond.net.au A Message
from our ‘Parent’ Organisation, in France . . . . . Hello, Thankyou for informing us about the opening of your
‘website’. It is very interesting. Bravo! It is a great satisfaction for us, for SIFAM, and for
Paul Dotte himself, to know and to see this distribution (broadcasting)
that you have made of the concepts and Methods of MANUTENTION. Both he and we are happy to contribute to the benefit
of both patients and nursing (in Australia). Gisela Gmeinder (from AAMPWA) visited us. I made the most of this opportunity to answer her
questions about us. She will explain to you our way of working and the
impact that we have in Europe. You
can count on us a future resource. Do not hesitate to contact us. Cordially to you, Jason, and to all your Colleagues. Lionel Marco. AAMP(WA) Inc . . . . . . .Some
